Improve the sound quality of your recordings

The PolderbitS Sound Recorder and Editor includes a number of filters that help improve the overall sound quality of your recordings. The Editor has an "Advanced" button that enlarges the Editor window and offers 3 filters;

  • A Click and Crackle filter for cleaning vinyl records
  • A Noise filter for cassette tape recordings
  • An Equalizer to enhance the sound quality for all recordings

All available filters can be switched on and off independently and act immediately (or in "real-time") on your recording. At any time you can switch between the original recording and the results of the filters so you can quickly compare the sound quality.

Note: Depending on your chosen display preferences in Windows,
this window might look somewhat different on your computer.

Click and Crackle filter

The Click & Crackle filter removes disturbances typical in Vinyl recordings. Crackle is the result of wear of the stylus and/or vinyl record, and is audible as short high-pitch sounds. Clicks are the result of a scratch in a vinyl record and are audible as plops. Clicks and Crackle replace the original sound, hence this sound is permanently damaged. As a result the original sound can never be 100% restored, not even with a filter. What the filter can do is reduce the sound effect of clicks and crackle as much as possible. The general idea is to set the sensitivity such that the filtered result sounds a lot better than the damaged recording.

Click & Crackle Filter

The crackle and click filters can be switched on and off independently. A single slider adjusts the sensitivity level for both filters. The click filter removes the clicks from your recording and there is an optional indicator that shows removed clicks in a red color in the editor wave view window.

Noise filter

The Noise filter removes background noise (also known as "white noise") that is typical in a tape or cassette recording. It can also be used to reduce noise in any other kind of recording. You can hear results immediately and a single slider adjusts the sensitivity level.

Equalizer

The 10-band real-time equalizer enhances the sound quality for all recordings.

Equalizer

The 10 sliders on the right allow you to adjust the volume of the entire frequency range from Bass (left-most slider) to Treble (right-most slider). The two left-most sliders, or single slider in case of a mono recording, allow you to increase or reduce the master volume of the entire recording. The equalizer frequency range is automatically selected, depending on the quality of the recording.

All sliders can easily be reset to their neutral positions. The Editor remembers the settings of the equalizer sliders and sliders in all other filters between edit sessions.

Playback & saving your results

All filters are combined in a single interface. A "Traffic light" shows you exactly what is playing now and you can quickly compare the filtered results with the original recording.

The wave view graphically shows the effect of the filters (what you see is what you hear) and a detailed zoom option is added for the left and right channel to see what exact changes your filter settings made to your recording.

The "real-time" action of the Editor requires some processing power of a PC. Some PC’s are slower so we added an adjustable response time depending on the speed and load of your PC. This means that the filters in the editor also work on slower PC’s.

You can save the result of your filtering to disk at any time. The resulting sound file can be played back in any other player or burnt on CD.
